Groeninge Museum

The Groeninge Museum,(Museum of Fine Arts), built between 1929 and 1930, keeps some of the most important and ancient works by Flemish and Dutch artists, the likes ofJan van Eyck, Hugo van der Goes, Pieter Brueghel, Hieronymous Bosch and many more, as well as modern works by Belgian artists like René Manritte and Paul Delvaux.
The museum originally laid on a single floor, and was subsequently enlarged to host additional exhibitions. Not to miss the painting by Hans Memling; the Triptych of the Family Moreel dated 1484, which is said to be the first group portrait in history, and the famous painting by Jan Van Eyck, the Madonna of Canon van der Paele, dated 1436, representing the meeting between the canon (probably the artist’s patron) and Saint Donato. Another important work is theUniversal Judgement by Hieronymous Bosch, representing cruel scenes of torture which symbolize the fragile and sinful nature of human beings.
