Heilig Bloed Basiliek

The Heilig Bloed Basiliek, or Basilica of the Holy Blood, is situated in Burg square, and is divided into two parts: in the lower part stands the Romanic Chapel of St. Basil, whereas the upper part is dominated by the gothic cathedral, which was rebuilt in the XIX century after being destroyed at the end of the 18th century by the French troops.
The upper part houses one of the most sacred relics in Europe: a small pot kept inside a silver tabernacle dated 1611, which is said to contain some drops of Christ’s blood, whose body was washed by Joseph of Arimathea.. The relic was brought from Jerusalem in 1150 by Diederik van de Elzas during the Crusades.
