The Markt of Bruges

The Markt is the main square of Bruges, where the markethas been held ever since the X century. The square is surrounded by medieval buildings, of which the oldest, belonging to Huis Bouchotte, has been the residence of the English king Charles II during his exile.
In the middle of the square stands the statue of Bruges Matin , representing Pietre de Coninck and Jan Breidel , two heroic chiefs who, on 18th May 1302, led the Flemish troops against the French invaders, and set the town free. This episode was the first of a series which led to the independence of the Netherlands.

The famous bell tower Belfort overlooks the square.
