Onze Lieve Vrouwekerk

The construction of the Onze Lieve Vrouwekerk, the Church of Our Lady, began in 1220, but was terminated only 200 years later, as the mix of different architectural styles proves. The inside is characterised by white walls, stone columns and a floor with black and white slabs, typical expression of the medieval architecture, whereas the pulpit and the lateral chapels are typically baroque.
At the bottom of the southern nave stands a sculpture by Michelangelo , Madonna with the Child , which was taken to Bruges by a rich Flemish merchant. Worthy of note are also the frescoes of the choir (by Pieter Pourbus ) with a representation of the Last Supper, and the Mausoleum dedicated to Prince Charles of Bourgogne and his daughter Maria.
